So in short, it’s another retelling of Moby Dick.
Directed by Ron Howard ( Apollo 13, The Grinch, A Beautiful Mind, Angels and Demons ) and lead by a very talented cast of actors such as Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Benjamin Walker, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw to name but a few. The big white whale is brought to life once more and breaches our screen.
Moby Dick the novel was originally published in 1851 and has since been adapted several times across print and screen. It is a tale about a winter in 1820, where the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size.
With the use of CGI the beast of the sea is brought to life in epic proportion. There is so much we don’t know about the ocean and this movie captures the vastness of that and the sea.
The difference with this movie, and what I think is its greatest strength, is that the focus is actually more on the crew of the Essex and how life at sea can affect you. The movie really depicts the commandery of men at sea, and it even explores the dark side of being away from your loved ones and civilisation too.
What would you do if you were abandoned at sea with no food or water, left to drift the ocean and meet your end by either starvation ( that’s if you don’t turn to cannibalism) or not knowing when the big white whale will strike…
In the movie Gleeson’s character struggles to relive the memories of the Essex as he recounts the story to the novelist Herman Melville ( Whishaw). The now aged cabin boy, Tom Nickerson opens up to Melville after his wife pleads with him to sell the story to make money to save their inn. As the story of his past progresses the flashback unfolds. Some great cinematography allows you to be brought into this story and see what is was truly like on a whaling ship.
The combination of the cinematography and the music score help to create great moments of suspense and tension throughout. A nice film to start the year with, a good mix of suspense, action and adventure. More for the men I would say and giving you a strong 4 movie punches:
Here is a little teaser if you are unsure on whether or not to watch it:
