Audiences love to go to the cinema and escape into the movies, whether it be to see the next big Hollywood blockbuster or the newest indie flick, and over the last few years we have seen an increase in female protagonists and leading ladies.
In 2016, a new study by San Diego State University’s Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film, showed that females made up 29% of protagonists in the top 100 films at the U.S. box office. The study also showed that Women made up 37% of major characters and this new found injection of female heroines was reflected in box office takings and reviews.
